Construction raises accessibility concerns, limits building entrances

Ongoing construction projects are creating accessibility problems for students with physical disabilities.

The most prominent of these issues is the decreased accessibility to the Campus Center, which is greatly impacting the safety and social life of students who use mobility aids.

General education changes bring new requirements, more course options

Rollins’ general education has undergone major changes after a student survey on the neighborhood system received 40 percent negative feedback.

After students voiced concerns about limited course selection, there is now an “open borders” policy that allows students to take multiple courses outside of their theme.

The new system is called rFLA 2.0, and also includes a new “ethical reasoning” competency and an option for students to fulfill one of their requirements with a non-rFLA course.

Incoming class is largest, most diverse in campus history

This fall Rollins welcomes what the Office of Admissions is calling the largest and most diverse class in Rollins history, increasing the number of incoming students of color by nearly five percent.

The incoming class is made up of 560 first year students and 80 transfer students, which is approximately 20 students larger than the average class size of previous years.

The most notable fact about this year’s incoming class is not its size, but its diversity. Students of color make up 36 percent

Taking a stand against gun violence

Students and faculty gathered together on Bush Lawn to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the Columbine tragedy.

Participants sat to honor those who have lost their lives to gun violence. Many of those gathered there also read moving speeches, recited poems, or gave performances.

The Commemoration of Columbine event was the idea of Jordan Boyd ‘21, an off-campus Holt student, who wanted to create the event in order to draw attention to the increased number of school shootings in the last 19 y

Violence rally features domestic abuse survivor, issues call to action

Rollins held its fourth-annual Rally Against Violence which encouraged students and faculty to stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault, not just at the rally, but always. It featured a local survivor of domestic violence and abuse.

The rally, which has been an ongoing project of Title IX Coordinator Oriana Jimenez, took place on Mills Lawn and brought together the voices of many different departments and organizations on campus, creating a space for the support of survivors of sexu

'On the Verge' set to open next week

On April 11, the Second Stage Series welcomes their final show of the season: On the Verge. Directed by Nicole Colangelo ‘18, On the Verge is a witty, comedy-filled excursion for the ages.

On the Verge was written by Eric Overmyer and debuted in 1985 at Baltimore’s Center Stage. Now, Rollins welcomes On the Verge to campus thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Second Stage Series, produced by Rollins Players and completely directed, designed, marketed, and performed by Rollins students.

Res Life addresses mold in Gale

Tests done in Gale Hall by Professional Service Industries, Inc. (PSI), a local environmental engineering firm called in by Rollins, show that mold growth was found in multiple rooms within the building, including the Chapter Room and three residents’ rooms.

CSS renovations planned after mold issues

Two professors were relocated from their offices in Cornell Hall for the Social Sciences (CSS) due to mold growth, while others are packing up in preparation to move out for the summer. This is the result of ongoing difficulties with controlling the moisture and humidity in CSS.

Significant renovations will be done to CSS over the summer. This includes removing ceiling and ductwork, replacing all exterior windows, and installing a new HVAC system, all in order to remedy the remaining causes of

Third party contractor retests Gale’s air quality

On March 6, a third party contractor retested Gale Hall for mold following student concerns about the air quality of their dorms possibly affecting their health.

As was revealed in a recent Sandspur article, students complained that they suffer from cough, sinus and throat issues, and exacerbated asthma symptoms, and believe it is associated with mold growth in their residential buildings.

Master tips offered for creative writing and Spanish poetry

The most recent Winter with the Writers visiting authors elaborated on the craft of writing and the challenges of creating poetry in a different language.

Mold concerns grow at Rollins

Last semester, Molly Fulop ‘20 “had a cough, sinus drainage, and throat pain.” After about a week of symptoms, Fulop visited the Wellness Center.

In her appointment, Fulop was told by a Wellness Center nurse practitioner that the mold in Ward was most likely contributing to the sickness lasting so long, and its severity.

Fulop fully believes that her symptoms were due to an environmental factor at Rollins, as her symptoms stopped when she went home for Thanksgiving break and then resumed upon

‘The Flick’ breathes fresh air into the Fred

As a part of the Second Stage Series, Rollins welcomed The Flick to the Fred Stone Theatre.

Eleemosynary was written by American playwright, Lee Blessing. The play premiered in 1985 and ran through to 1989, closing with a three-week run at the Manhattan Theater Club.
